Biography:
Melanie Ann Wegner grew up exploring the woods and cornfields around small towns in her native Missouri. Like many little girls, she was wildly in love with horses. Denied owning a pony, she started drawing detailed pictures of them, which led her onto her artistic path. Her love of nature and animals infuses her work, and a big part of the humor and whimsy in her clay sculptures comes from the relationships communicated between the sculpted characters. Her animals aptly, and often comically, reflect human psychology, emotions, and expressions.
Melanie's work explores alternative surface decoration beyond glaze, including cold wax, oil paints, drawing techniques and embedded materials. She has also worked with the organization FUSE at the anagama (single chamber) wood fired kiln in Madrid, NM. A self-taught ceramic sculptor, there are notable ceramic artists who have influenced her work, many with whom she has taken workshops. They include Cristina Cordova, George Bowes, Ron Meyers, and Peter Vandenberg. In addition to clay sculpture, she also does abstract paintings and realistic drawings.
Melanie is also an independent businesswoman with a long career in graphic design. She attended the University of Missouri, the Corcoran Art Institute in Washington, D.C. and the Colorado Art Institute in Denver, Colorado. She is now finding her vocation in the expression of her first love.
